Real Time Kinematic (RTK) GPS Surveys

RTK stands for Real Time Kinematic and refers to a technique utilising GPS equipment to survey points of detail with a GPS receiver on a pole.

Carrier phase measurements of the GPS, GLONASS and/or Galileo signals are used, where a single reference station provides the real-time corrections to obtain centimetre levels of accuracy.

Network GPS RTK (such as Leica Smartnet) methods extends the use of RTK to a countrywide network of fixed reference stations to link into. This technique requires only the rover, so one man operation is possible.

Benefits or RTK surveys:
  • Rapid field survey technique to cover large areas quickly
  • Does not require line of site on the ground as with conventional survey
  • Real time assurance of measurement quality for detail points observed in the field
  • Removes requirement for excessive ground control stations
  • Ideal for route surveys, pipelines, long sections, floodplains……
