Areas and Volume Computations

Utilising our survey software ‘n4ce’ and point cloud modelling software ‘cyclone’, we are able to offer solutions to compute areas and volumes from small scale (cm – say the surface of an airport runway) to large scale fields in hectares. We are able to create accurate digital terrain models (DTM) from our topographical surveys, or use a range of techniques to adopt existing survey data in hard copy or digital format. This DTM model data is then used to compute contour lines, compare surfaces to form Isopachytes (difference contours) and area / volume analysis.

We are used to dealing with the effects of settlement over time, undertaking repeat yearly studies and carrying out computations using a number of different methods to analyses our results.

We have used these techniques to great effect on:
  • Stock pile volumes (muck shift!)
  • Lake water and silt volumes
  • Quarry extractions (cut & fill)
  • Landfill and Refuse tips
  • Legal disputes
  • Farm Set-Aside applications (field areas)
  • Planning applications
  • Feasibility studies

Summary of deliverables:

  • Digital Terrain Models (DTM)
  • Contour plans
  • Isopachyte contours
  • Defined Areas
  • Volumes:
         o Cut & Fill
         o Between surfaces
         o From a datum level
         o From a datum plane
         o From an inclined plane
The final stage of any project involves the production of a report detailing the findings of our analysis, accuracies, sources of error and drawings of the areas in question.
